Three Decades of Pokémon: What’s Behind Its Staying Power?

Three Decades of Pokémon: What’s Behind Its Staying Power?

In 2026, Pokémon celebrates 30 years since the original games launched in Japan. What began with two video games has grown into a global franchise spanning games, animated series, manga, trading cards, films and much more.

Three decades on, Pokémon continues to reach new audiences while remaining familiar to those who grew up with it. Recognisable characters and memorable moments connect longtime fans with a world that continues to evolve.

GROWING UP WITH POKÉMON

For longtime fans, Pokémon may be tied to a particular time in life: a favourite game, a memorable episode or the excitement of collecting cards. Characters such as Pikachu, Charizard and the original starter Pokémon remain familiar to those who first encountered the franchise decades ago.

Some of those early fans are now introducing Pokémon to their own children, sharing characters and experiences that have been part of their lives for years.

But not everyone comes to Pokémon through childhood memories. Younger fans discover it through newer games, animated series, manga or trading cards. They may start with a completely different favourite before exploring more of the Pokémon world.

The franchise has room for both: people returning to something familiar and people finding it for the first time.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO EXPERIENCE POKÉMON

Part of Pokémon’s staying power is its ability to explore familiar characters and ideas in different ways.

The main video game series invites players to explore regions, discover Pokémon and build teams. But not every game follows the same formula. Released in March 2026, Pokémon Pokopia takes a different approach, with players controlling a Ditto in human form and building a world alongside other Pokémon.

Anime and manga offer their own stories and perspectives, while the franchise continues to experiment with different styles on screen. POKÉMON Detective Pikachu brought Pokémon into a live-action setting, imagining them alongside people in a modern city. Pokémon Concierge, meanwhile, uses stop-motion animation to tell a more relaxed, slice-of-life story.

From different styles of gameplay to distinct approaches to storytelling, these formats show how the Pokémon world can be explored beyond its traditional adventures.

FROM FAVOURITE POKÉMON TO FAVOURITE CARDS

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is another major part of the franchise, bringing together collecting and gameplay.

For some collectors, the artwork is the main attraction. Others enjoy building decks, learning the rules and testing their strategies against other players. Favourite Pokémon, memorable illustrations and the excitement of discovering a sought-after card can all be part of the appeal.

The game also creates opportunities to connect with other fans, from local leagues and casual matches to organised tournaments. These settings bring together players with different levels of experience, including those who have been playing for years and those still learning the basics.

The cards also link back to the wider Pokémon universe. A familiar character can appeal to longtime fans and newer collectors alike, even if they first encountered it through different games or series.

WHEN POKÉMON BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER

Pokémon’s reach extends beyond screens and collections. In 2016, Pokémon GO brought the franchise into the real world, encouraging players to explore their surroundings and encounter Pokémon through their phones. Its popularity showed how a familiar world could become an activity people shared beyond the home.

Online communities offer another way for fans to engage with the franchise, from discussing new releases to sharing collections and celebrating favourite Pokémon.

In Japan, the opening of PokéPark KANTO in February 2026 added another way to step into the Pokémon world. The permanent outdoor attraction in Tokyo includes the Pokémon Forest and a town area, bringing familiar characters and settings into an in-person experience.

From exploring together to sharing an interest online or experiencing the Pokémon world in person, the franchise extends beyond the games, cards and stories themselves.

THIRTY YEARS ON, THERE'S STILL MORE TO DISCOVER

Thirty years after its debut, Pokémon continues to build on the world it first introduced while finding new ways to explore it.

Its games, stories, cards and real-world experiences each offer something different, giving the franchise room to keep evolving and open the door to people discovering Pokémon for the first time.

Whether it’s a familiar favourite or a new adventure, there’s no single way to be a Pokémon fan.
